Night Photographer Jerry Burchard's Photos

Jerry Burchard was born December 1, 1931 and raised in Rochester, Upstate New York. At the age of 16 Jerry was a third generation Kodak worker (the largest employer in the area.)
He joined the Navy and served as a photographer in Europe, shooting mostly car and plane wrecks that involved military equipment.
After the Navy, at the suggestion of Minor White, Jerry attended and later taught (and was chairman of the department for a while) what is now called the San Francisco Art Institute. At this time in the 50's Jerry was doing portraits of the San Francisco North Beach artists, after wanting originally to do jazz musicians but finding that most of them had died.
In the 70's Jerry would teach for a while at SFAI, and then would go live for months at a time in exotic places around the world, hang out, and take photos.
Casablanca, Goulimine, Madrid, Ping Yuen, Bangkok, Burma, and other locations were all well suited for Jerry's night walks with his camera, capturing the ambiance, the feel of being there. (His favorite became Bangkok, Thailand.)
One time Jerry told me that he found a rock by some bushes to set up the camera, opened the shudder and went to have a drink. Jerry came back, took a look at the scene, and decided that it was a two drink exposure, so went back to have that second drink. 'It's whatever feels right' he use to tell me.

This 32-page artbook of high quality photographs show the street food that can be found in the area around Nana Plaza, Soi 4, in Bangkok, Thailand. We were even able to visit the marketplace where the street vendors buy their food to prepare. During the day three different vendors share the came sidewalk, the morning food, the afternoon clothes and crafts, and the evening meal vendors. Barbecuing right on their carts some wonderful dishes. These are printed and hardbound on demand.

Come join us as we take a tour of the Suan-Lum Night Bazaar with Ting and Michael. Then its off to the Chatuchak Weekend Market with Ton on banjo. You can even get a pet squerrel there (although I wonder how tame it will be when the drugs wear off.).
We head up to the Damnoensaduak Floating Market to have some noodles, and finally its a visit to the capital with Tom 35 right after the military coup, giving flowers to the soldiers.

Had the opportunity to be able to videotape a rare Big Island performance of Aunty Genoa Keawe with her family band. She had turned 88 the week before the show, and her voice is in excellent form. Opening the show is The Lim Family. Lots of hula accompanying this old time Hawaiian music. It was the opening night of the 1st annual Moku O Keawe International Hula Festival at the Hilton Waikoloa Village.

This is a bunch of Thai guys who dress up in cowboy outfits, and play bluegrass music on banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, percussion, and vocal at the Bangkok weekend market.
Its one of the biggest marketplaces in the world, with clothing, food, toys, kitchen ware, and bluegrass music cd's available for purchase.
Ton, Num and the boys perform in front of their stall. Some of their friends come down, dressed the part, just to hang out and look like cowboys, even rolling their own cigarettes. It's way cool.
And some great music.

Aunty Jojo's 71st Birthday Party

Aunty Jojo has been connected with Kaha'alu and the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort for her entire life. She was born on the property, and has performed there for many many years with her family band, Aloha Aina.

Queen Lili'uokalani Canoe Race

Labor Day marks that time of the year again, when the best paddlers from around the world come to Kona for the largest long-distance outrigger canoe race from Kailua Bay to Honaunau and back. Thousands of participants, hundreds of canoes.

Tiki Celebrates Her 89th Birthday

It was a party to be had!

Tiki Hartman, renowned hula dancer from the 40's, 50's, and 60's, had a Polynesian-style birthday on the Captain Bean Boat while crusing along the Kailua-Kona coastline. There was plenty music, dance, food, and drink. The relatives and friends along with the tourists onboard throughly enjoyed the evening.

Recent News: Archive -ing the 80's

Two rather interesting developments have recently occurred regarding the old Leonard's Artspace days in the Central Valley of California. (This was a driveby art gallery, performance space, and television production house during the 1980's.)

Some of the limited-edition handmade artist-book catalogues for exhibitions held at the Artspace, ie: The Mail-In Container Show, War In 84, and Still Alive in 85; have been in the archives of Franklin's Furnace (a library of limited edition artist books) in New York City for twenty years.
Currently Franklin's Furnace has been more interested in presenting performance art in Brooklyn, or somewhere like that. So they worked out a deal which enables the Museum of Modern Art in New York City to acquire the Franklin's Furnace artists book archives for MOMA's permanant collection. So I guess I'm now buried in the archives of the Museum of Modern Art.

Another thing that made me think of those Leonard's Artspace days is LA independent filmmaker, Lilly Scourtis of Desert Flower Productions. She is working on a documentry about Marian Halloway, who was the singer of 5 Fingers, an audio art band from the 80's. Marian went on to being in bands in San Francisco. I found an interview (about Modesto, California), a few performance clips (from Live In Mendo-Land) and an audio recording to include in the project that featured Marian. So hopefully you will be able to view "Last Fast Ride (The life, love and death of a punk goddess) at a film festival near you.

(I found out through Lilly that Marian had died of a herion overdose in 2001.

As we open this series,
On The Big Island of Hawai'i we are currently airing Polynesian Paradise, One for Keanuhea (Jennifer). She had been dancing with the halau since she was 5 years old, and now Keanuhea is off to college in Oahu. We gathered up some feature footage of the girl for this special tribute, including a clip of Keanuhea when she was a young girl performing with Kumu JayJay's musicans at King Kamehameha Hotel for Uncle George's birthday bash, back in 2002.

Airtime for this 30 minutes of Polynesian Paradise dancing fun is:
Tuesdays at 8 pm, and Fridays at 9:30 pm on cable ch 54 on the Big Island of Hawai'i
